What is Aeration &
Why Should I Aerate?
Lawn aeration is the process of perforating, or putting holes in, your lawn.
Benefits of aeration include:
Water, nutrients, and air can seed deeper in the soil. This is the number 1 benefit to lawn aeration! For most of the year, grass absorbs nutrients, water, and sunlight through the blade. Aeration holes allow these vital things to reach the root system where they can be absorbed much more efficiently and effectively.
Breaks up Compacted Soil. Over time, the ground hardens and compacts, preventing grass roots from getting the nutrients they need. Aeration holes allow compacted soil to loosen, expand, and BREATHE.
Healthy Grass Roots. Grass roots expand and grow into the aeration holes, promoting a deeper, healthier root system.
Water runoff and puddling are greatly diminished. Low spots in the yard may be eliminated or lessened as compacted soil breaks down.
Lawn thatch is greatly diminished. Thatch is a layer of organic matter (dead plant roots, leaves, etc.) that builds up between the soil and the grass in a lawn preventing your lawn from having a healthier root system.
Better PH balance. Certain nutrients, like sulfur and lime, are able to get deeper in your lawn and help keep it at a proper PH of 6.5, encouraging optimal grass growth.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q: Do I need to be home for my aeration?
A: Nope! Just make sure any gates are unlocked.
Q: What do I need to do to prepare for my aeration?
A: Book your appointment. Unlock your back gate. Put your pets and children inside. Pick up anything on the lawn that you don't want ran over (toys mainly).
Q: When should I cut my lawn?
A: Before the aeration so as to not blow away grass seed after the service. Also, do not remove grass clippings for 2-4 weeks after aeration. Grass clippings = fertilizer.
Q: What type of grass seed do you use?
A: Kentucky bluegrass (no mix) spread at a rate of 1.5 - 2lbs per 1000sqft. This seed takes 14-21 days to germinate and is ideal for midwestern states like Indiana.
